Step 1: Reflection

This first step is designed to help you to strengthen your self-awareness through making some initial assessments regarding your current gifts, strengths, weaknesses and character.

Places to look for insight:

  • Friends and family – Talk to those whose opinions you value and trust. What do they say are your passions, strengths and weaknesses?
  • Personal Revelation – Set aside time to listen to God through prayer and His Word. He will reveal much to us if we have ears to hear.
  • Experiences – Think about those that you found most satisfying or fulfilling. What talents, gifts, strengths or skills were important factors?
  • Assessment tools – The link below will take you to a page of Self-Assessment Tools. Take as many or as few as you think would be helpful.

Click here for the recommended Assessment Tools page.

Now think about what you’ve learned and look for strengths and areas needing growth.

Based on the insights you have gathered, think about questions such as:

  • What do your insights tell you about where you are now?
  • Were the results what you expected or were there surprises for you?
  • How might God want to make the most fruitful use of your strengths, gifts and passions?

Now record what you discover about yourself. Click here for a Word document that you could use for keeping track of what you’re learning. If you do decide to use it, remember to save it to your computer before you close it, or you will lose your information.

However, please remember that you are free to make this as personal to you as you’d like. If you’d prefer to keep a journal, draw diagrams, write lists, etc – do it that way instead.
