Helping children through the Orphans and Vulnerable Children’s (OVC) project in Rundu, Namibia was a ministry highlight for young South Australian nurse Shelley Jacobs.
Shelley spent six months in Namibia to November 2008. She worked as a paediatric nurse in the Rundu government hospital and was involved in the Orphan and Vulnerable Children’s Project near Rundu.
Shelley said her time in Namibia was a great experience. She especially enjoyed being a part of the community in which the OVC project operated. This community is based in a village of mud and stick homes a few kilometers out of Rundu.
This project was run by a local church, with assistance from AIM. Almost 200 children benefited from the project. This included a high-protein meal twice a week, home-based care, and weekly ministry through such things as Bible stories and games.
Shelley said she loved being able to share and mix with the children and young people of the village. Perhaps the most difficult part of her ministry was facing the high mortality rate in the hospital.
