Here's how our process works
1
Start a conversation
Fill in our enquiry form to let us know you’re interested in serving as a missionary in Africa. We’ll contact you to discuss your interests, skills and faith journey.
If your church agrees, and you’re keen to join us, we’ll invite you to formally apply. Submit an application, and we’ll consider potential assignments together. We have a comprehensive interview process involving you and your church leaders.
2
Prepare and partner
Once your placement or assignment is confirmed, we’ll provide a budget for your costs, arrange attendance at our Home Based Orientation, and assist in the preparations needed to serve overseas.
This will include medical and security checks, biblical training (for long term placements, if not already completed), and applying for visas and permits.
All workers heading to Africa will need to raise a partnership team for prayer and financial support, so we’ll help you haprtner with your church to build the support you’ll need.
3
Head to the field
Once you’re in Africa, you’ll undertake a comprehensive orientation and start your field assignment.
Whatever your skill set, your placement will be designed to advance the gospel among Africa’s unreached. You might find yourself talking about Jesus with villagers in a remote area, serving at a busy regional hospital, or perhaps teaching Biblical theology to African pastors.
Throughout your time in Africa, you’ll have ongoing access to AIM’s resources and support. We provide holistic member care through an Africa-Based support team. And, our Asia-Pacific team will also stay in touch.
4
Debrief and next steps
When your placement is finished, we’ll help you debrief and plan next steps.
Long-term missionaries take Home Assignment before starting their next term.
On their return, short term workers often elect to train at a Bible College, plan future short term assignments, or consider serving in Africa long term.
How much time does it take to get ready to serve with AIM?
The application process with AIM, including consultation with your church, an application form, reference checks and interviews, can take approximately 3 to 4 months to complete.
Once your application is approved, the process of preparing to serve as a missionary in Africa can take from 6 months to around a year. There is much to work on in this time, from matters of spiritual readiness and preparing to serve cross culturally, to practical considerations like raising a support team, psychological and medical checks, applying for visas and permits, and arranging to move overseas.
If you plan to serve long-term but haven’t yet completed your AIM Bible Requirements, then completing this will add time to the process.
We’ll work with you to clarify likely timeframes when you apply.
Do I need to be sent by my church?
Yes. We will only send you to serve in partnership with your local church.
We believe the church has primary responsibility for raising up and sending missionaries, and we aim to support this endeavour by working closely with them.
And, your church knows you best! They’ll help us determine the most appropriate ways for you to serve, and they’ll be the foundation of your support team.
What if I don't know where I want to serve yet?
We’re committed to helping you figure out how God might be calling you to serve. The key is to be open to His leading, willing to share the gospel and make disciples in a variety of contexts. We’ll prayerfully work with you to match your skills and interests with some of the many current opportunities in the field.
How much does it cost?
This depends on the realistic living costs of the area you are sent to. We also take into consideration your family size and needs.
Funds for mission work with AIM are raised through your church and wider Christian network. When you are accepted for service we will prepare a budget for your placement or assignment. We’ll guide you and your church through the process of raising financial support.
What experience do I need to apply?
You’ll need an active faith in Jesus, experience serving and leading at church, and in sharing the gospel and discipling others, or experience serving in support roles for these priorities.
For long term workers, AIM requires biblical and missiological competencies, and can recommend suitable training courses if needed.
You may also need ministry specific requirements depending on your assignment. For short term placements, no biblical training is required, but you will need to know how to explain the gospel.
